Flats Tutorial

Description

Lesson 1 for my Digital Coloring Class.

You don't have to use my line art for this, but if you want to it is here: [link] as a .pdf and here: [link] as a jpg.

To upload a .psd file you need a separate preview image to upload as well. First upload the .psd file and it will ask you to upload a preview image. The preview image will appear below where you uploaded the deviation. I generally make my preview image double the size with the lines beside it, but you don't have to. You can simply upload a .jpg or other image file. Here are some examples of mine: [link] [link] .

In summary, your assignment is to make flats using either your or someone else's line art. Be sure to give credit if you use someone else's! You must upload the flats as a .psd file. The assignment is due Friday. If you have any questions, let me know. If something comes up to where you cannot upload by Friday, send me a note!

This assignment is worth 5 points.

Have fun!

*** Clarification*** Digital Coloring Class students I have noticed I need to clarify. If you are still unsure as to what the expectations are please download these flats as an example: [link] . When you download it use the magic wand tool and select different colors, zoom in to see that there are no gaps as well and to see that the colors do not fade into each other. There is a very distinct line to where one color ends and the other begins.

Guidelines:
1. Flats must all be on ONE layer.
2. There should be NO gaps between your colors. (I did at least say this in the tutorial.)
3. Only your line art should be on a different layer (background color can also be a separate layer, but doesn't have to be.)
4. You can only use the Pencil tool to draw with. Normal setting 100 % opacity. You CANNOT use the brush tool.
5. Do not add any details or shading, it will only complicate things in the following lessons.
6. Use the polygonal lasso tool then the fill bucket tool to color in large areas, ex: hair, skin.
7. Use the pencil tool to color small areas, ex: eyes, buttons.

The purpose of flats is to minimize the number of layers, but to be able to shade the different colors without overlapping. Flats are not a finished piece, so don't expect them to look finished by adding details or shading. The shading will be done in next week's lesson. The flats you do for this assignment will be part of the next 2 wks assignments. It is EXTREMELY important that you follow these guidelines. Not only will it hurt your grade, but it will make it harder to follow the following lessons.

If you need to re-do the assignment, I am giving until Tuesday of next week. If that is not enough time, let me know. Also, if I should do a video for clarification, also, let me know. Please let me know if you have any questions!

I will be downloading your assignments to make sure that you have followed the guidelines.

I apologize for any confusion.
